So, you’ve made the decision that you want to get married abroad and have opted for the luxury idea of having a destination wedding. Planning a destination wedding can be a lot harder than planning a wedding in the country that you reside in as there are so many other things you need to factor in! Here are my top 10 things you need to consider when choosing your perfect destination wedding location.

Budget

Your budget should always be at the forefront when planning your wedding, no matter where you have decided to plan your wedding. Make sure that you do your research and you find out how much things cost in that country and don’t forget to factor in that pesky exchange rate and international transfer fees! Exchange rates will fluctuate and you will have to pay international transfer fees in order to transfer money abroad, so making sure that you account for that in the budget will help a lot.

Stay True to Yourselves

Find a location that you both love and that is authentic to you! Don’t select a location that you don’t love. If you haven’t been before – definitely arrange a trip, so that you can make an informed decision before fully committing. You’ll get asked a ton of questions from your guests and you’ll probably need to arrange trips and accommodation too, so you want to be at least slightly familiar with the area.

Your Guests

Your guests are a very big part of your wedding day and they will be travelling a lot further to come to your wedding and spending a lot more money than they would if it was more local. Make sure that you take all of this into consideration when selecting a location.

Legalities

Different countries have different laws when it comes to people not residing in that country getting married in a different country. Make sure that you do enough research. Some countries will require different documents to show that you aren’t legally married already, and some may require you to reside in the country for a few weeks or months before the wedding, which may not always be possible for you to do. Bear in mind that it may be easier to have a blessing instead and to sign all the relevant legal paperwork in the country that you reside in before or after the wedding.

Weather

Weather can play a huge part in your wedding and will be the deciding factor when selecting indoor and outdoor celebrations. Make sure that you take into account how warm or how cold it can get and make sure that you are not only happy with this but prepared for this as well. This may also affect the date you book as well, as depending on when you book, will depend on the season it falls in.

TIP – Remember if you are honeymooning afterwards you will need to double pack! Try and choose locations that are similar in weather so that you can re-wear your clothes. Having to pack warm clothes, as well as summer clothes, as well as your wedding attire and everything else you need for your wedding, will mean lugging around a lot more luggage than you may want to!

Local Cuisine

There’s no point selecting a location if you don’t like the food. Most countries don’t have a range of different types of cuisine, so you’ll be eating a lot of the same food whilst you are there. If you’re looking at staying there for a while before the big day, then it wouldn’t be great if you were already sick of the food by the time it got to your big day!

Language

Communication is key when it comes to planning a wedding, so make sure that you can communicate with suppliers and your venue. It may be beneficial to hire a destination wedding planner that is more familiar with the language and the area and can help you organise everything with your suppliers.

Honeymoon

If you have decided on honeymooning after your wedding, selecting a location that is closer to your ideal honeymoon location will reduce your travelling time. Make sure you take into account seasons as well as it may be great weather for your destination wedding, but it may be in the middle of monsoon weather for your ideal honeymoon location.

Accessibility

Destination wedding locations can be incredibly beautiful, but they can also be incredibly remote as well. Make sure that you do your research you are prepared for this. Take into account if it is easy to get to; if there are local suppliers; if you need to ship things in; local accommodation etc.

Travel

Take into consideration how far away the destination is that you are choosing and how many times you may need to visit to organise everything. Choosing a destination that is very far away will not only eat into your holiday days but may also cost a lot more than a destination that is closer.
